Plateau State is once again in mourning. In what has become an all-too-familiar tragedy, multiple communities in Mangu and Bassa Local Government Areas have been devastated by brutal attacks that have claimed over 40 lives in the past week alone.
💔 What Happened?
Between Monday and Tuesday, June 10–11, suspected armed militia launched coordinated attacks across several villages including Langai, Gyenbwas, Chicim, Kubwon, and Chinchim. Eyewitnesses recount horrifying scenes of gunfire, arson, and cold-blooded killings that left men, women, and even children dead.
In Chicim community alone, at least 8 people were killed on Tuesday night. More than 96 houses were reduced to ashes in Gyenbwas, and about 30 hectares of farmland reportedly seized.
🧭 Where It Hit Hardest
Langai & Gyenbwas (Mangu LGA): 20+ killed, over 90 houses burnt
Chicim Village (Mangu LGA): 8 killed, dozens injured
Kubwon & Chinchim: Additional casualties and property destruction
Bassa LGA: 6 confirmed dead, with 12 others hospitalized
🔁 A Cycle of Revenge?
The cause of the violence is said to stem from recurring farmer–herder clashes, with land disputes, cattle grazing routes, and long-standing ethnic tensions escalating into open conflict. According to locals, these are not isolated incidents but part of a larger pattern of unaddressed insecurity and marginalization.
🛡️ Where Is the Government?
Despite heavy deployment of security personnel and the presence of the military-led Operation Safe Haven, many residents feel unprotected and abandoned.
The Inspector General of Police and Plateau State authorities have assured citizens that swift investigations and reinforcements are ongoing, but locals are demanding more proactive protection, not post-crisis promises.
📸 Mass Burials & Collective Grief
The sorrow is palpable. Heart-wrenching images from Mangu show dozens of coffins laid side by side as grieving families and community members say their final goodbyes. The mass burial is a tragic symbol of the human cost of Nigeria’s failure to resolve recurring ethnic and communal violence.
> “These were our mothers, our brothers, our children. This cannot continue,” said a local youth leader.
✊ What Now?
As Nigeria continues to battle multiple fronts of insecurity — from banditry in the Northwest to insurgency in the Northeast — the tragedy in Plateau reminds us of the urgent need for:
Stronger community policing
Fair land reform and grazing laws
Justice for victims
Genuine reconciliation efforts

🕊️ May the souls of the departed rest in peace. May their deaths spark the justice and healing this land so desperately needs.
